The Meet Cute is an old Hollywood screenwriters name for a plot device in which future romantic partners first encounter each other.
The term dates back to the ‘screwball comedies’ of the Great Depression when a ‘meet cute’ scene was needed to throw together people from different backgrounds whose paths wouldn’t ordinarily cross.
Nowadays there’s still that first encounter, but what we might think of as cute has changed and we can meet our partners anywhere.
